NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday registered the highest single-day spike of 95,735 cases in a day as the death toll from the coronavirus across the world crossed the 900,000 mark. The vaccine programme also hit a roadblock when Serum Insititute halted the India trials of Oxford vaccine.
Here is a look at today's development on coronavirus from India, its states and around the world—
INDIA

  • With the highest single day spike of 95,735 new cases and 1,172 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, India's Covid-19 tally crossed the 44-lakh mark on Thursday. The total number of coronavirus cases stand 44,65,864 including 9,19,018 active cases, 34,71,784 cured/recovered/migrated and 75,062 deaths.
  • India conducted over 9,000 RTPCR/CBNAAT/True Nat tests and 49,336 Rapid antigen test. A total of 19,62,120 tests done so far.
  • India has adopted strategies to ensure that there are increased investments in health and emergency preparedness to prevent future pandemics, health minister Harsh Vardhan said.
  • In the monsoon session, LS will meet at 9 am on Sept 14. Seats have been allocated to different parties proportionally in the two houses of the parliament as per their respective strengths. Members above 60-65 years have been advised to sit in galleries.
  • Serum Institute of India has put trials of AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine candidate on hold until the British drugmaker restarts the trials, Serum said on Thursday. "We are reviewing the situation and pausing India trials," Serum said in a brief statement.
  • United Airlines to operate daily flights on Delhi-Chicago, Bengaluru-San Francisco routes. "Together with the airline's existing services from New Delhi and Mumbai to New York/Newark and New Delhi to San Francisco, United will offer more nonstop services from India than any other U.S carrier," the airline said in a press release.

STATES

HIMACHAL PRADESH: Over 4.53 lakh people returned to Himachal Pradesh during the coronavirus lockdown, a state minister informed the assembly Thursday.
UTTARAKHAND: The Covid-19 surge continued in Uttarakhand on Thursday with 1,015 more people testing positive taking the state's pandemic tally to 28,226 while five more coronavirus positive patients died. It is for the second consecutive day that the state has reported more than one thousand cases on a single day.
HARYANA: Crime cases in Gurugram have seen a 35 per cent decline till August 31, 2020, as compared to the same period of the previous year due to the spread of the Covid-19 virus and the lockdown. This year a significent drop was noticed in the number of crime cases.
WEST BENGAL: Bengal government cancels the proposed lockdown on September 12 to remove any travel-related anxieties of NEET aspirants who will appear for their NEET (UG) examinations on Sunday, September 13.
MAHARASHTRA: While the doubling rate was 93 days on August 25, right in the midst of the Ganpati festival, it was 63 days on Tuesday. Mumbai reported 587 cases on August 25 (low due to a technical issue with the ICMR website), while the cases climbed to 2,227 on Wednesday. The city has, on an average, been registering 1,200 cases daily since May last week
KERALA: The Lord Krishna temple in Guruvayur in Kerala was opened on Thursday with devotees following Covid-19 protocol. As part of the Covid-19 protocol, the temple authorities have started allowing darshan for 1,000 people from today after they registered themselves through an online portal.
KARNATAKA: Pictures and videos shared widely on social media show how people blatantly violate norms as they shop, eat, pray and conduct business. Large numbers are seen at political, religious and social gatherings, and major markets in Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka also draw crowds, where enforcing safety guidelines was a challenge even during lockdowns.
