Joe Root‘s resolute innings was brought to an end by Josh Hazlewood as England’s hopes of clinching a stunning Ashes victory were dashed early on day five.
Requiring 178 runs to win the match and level the series following the ten-wicket defeat in Brisbane, England lost Chris Woakes and Root in the first three overs of the day.
All-rounder Woakes was the first to go, edging Hazlewood to wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine, and in Hazlewood’s next over he dismissed Root in similar fashion.

Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, former England spinner Phil Tufnell said of the dismissal: ‘Another ball in the danger area.
‘It’s a decent line and length, attacking the off-stump. What a start for Australia. Terrible for England. Hazlewood is the the go-to guy, isn’t he?’
