Gary Lineker has defended Match of the Day’s failure to pick up on an incident involving Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku.

During Saturday’s match at Old Trafford between the Red Devils and Brighton, the Belgian striker appeared to kick out at opponent Gaetan Bong.

Video footage shows Lukaku striking Bong twice in the space of a few seconds as a corner was being taken in the 1-0 win for Manchester United.

The incident went unnoticed by referee Neil Swarbrick – and also Match of the Day.

But Lineker, who presents the show, says the incident was simply not noticed by the editors of the BBC highlights programme.

We didn’t see it at the time. We had 5 games to watch at 3pm. Wasn’t mentioned by a single Sunday newspaper. Only came to light after a few Brighton fans mentions on Twitter late on Saturday night. Certainly was not a decision to not show it. ?

The FA are set to review Swarbrick’s match notes before deciding whether to charge Lukaku.

If the Manchester United striker is found guilty of violent conduct, he could be hit with a three match ban which would rule him out of the midweek match against Watford and then away to Arsenal and the clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford on 10 December.
