An illegal immigrant from Mexico allegedly assaulted a U.S. Border Patrol agent assigned to the Tucson Sector on Friday morning.

The Border Patrol agent came upon a group of suspected illegal immigrants immediately north of the international border between Mexico and Arizona. As the agent attempted to arrest a 22-year-old Mexican national, the man resisted and threw dirt in the agent’s face, according to a statement provided to Breitbart Texas from Border Patrol spokesman Rob Daniels.

The agent managed to subdue the suspect and place him in custody after a brief struggle. The Mexican national received no injuries and refused medical attention.

Doctors examined the agent at a local hospital and later released him.

The Mexican national now faces charges for immigration violations and assaulting a federal agent.

Breitbart Texas reported on Saturday that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California refused to prosecute a Mexican national after his alleged assault on a Border Patrol agent landed the agent in the hospital for head injuries.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent received a concussion after being struck in the head by flying metal after an illegal immigrant plowed through a road sign while allegedly bypassing a checkpoint during a human smuggling run, Breitbart Texas reported on Friday. While the illegal alien from Mexico is being prosecuted for human smuggling, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California is not yet filing any assault charges in the case, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials told Breitbart Texas on Thursday.

Breitbart Texas reached out to the U.S. Attorney’s office in San Diego on Thursday afternoon for an explanation about the lack of charges.

The U.S. Department of Justice has not responded to a request from Breitbart Texas for information on the California case and other prosecutions for assaults against Border Patrol agents.

Over the weekend, Border Patrol Agent Rogelio Martinez died in West Texas from severe head trauma. Breitbart Texas broke the news that Martinez died and another agent was hospitalized in severe condition, also with cranial injuries. This outlet also first reported on the allegations from the ground that the agents were attacked.

The father of the agent told The New York Times that he observed his son’s injury and that he believed his son is the victim of an attack.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott offered a $20,000 reward for information about the death of Agent Martinez, Breitbart Texas reported.

“We owe a great deal of gratitude to the brave men and women of the United States Border Patrol who serve every day to protect our homeland,” Governor Abbott said in a statement obtained by Breitbart Texas. “Cecilia and I offer our deepest condolences to the families of the agents killed and seriously injured in this attack. As authorities continue their investigation, it is important that they receive any and all information to help apprehend and deliver swift justice to those responsible.”

Despite claims by media outlets that the agents in Texas may have been injured accidentally, FBI investigators told reporters on Tuesday that they are investigating the matter as an assault on a federal agent.

Brandon Darby and Ildefonso Ortiz reported:

The NBPC and Border Patrol agents on the ground believe the agents were attacked due to eyewitness testimony of agents who saw the scene, the massive manhunt that was mobilized and sustained, and the realities of the area in regards to its high levels of Mexican narcotics trafficking and human smuggling. The area is approximately 30 miles from the Texas border with Mexico.

The left-of-center news outlets alleging that authorities believe an accident is to blame are largely giving half-truths. In any such investigation, the FBI would consider all possibilities — including that an accident was a fault and that an attack was to blame for the matter. This is the nature of investigations.
