England were hit by another injury scare when Jake Ball sprained his right ankle at the Adelaide Oval.

First-change Ball was bowling round the wicket as he fell to the ground in his fifth over. He was unable to resume and left the pitch for further treatment from England physio Craig de Weymarn.

England reported soon afterwards that he would not return on day two of their pink-ball trial match.

The tourists' opponents, a Cricket Australia XI, recovered from 57 for five to 128 without further loss by the dinner break in reply to 293 all out.

Ball will have his injury reassessed overnight.

It comes just two days after fellow seamer Steven Finn had to leave the tour with torn knee cartilage. Finn was replaced by the uncapped Tom Curran.

England began day two by losing their ninth and 10th wickets for 15 runs, as rookie leg-spinner Daniel Fallins completed a five-wicket haul on his first-class debut when he had James Anderson lbw.

It completed a sequence of five wickets for the addition of just 22 which began the previous evening, but it meant at least that England could set about making their own inroads with the ball.

They did well initially, until Matt Short and home captain Tim Paine joined forces in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 71 which more than doubled the score and exposed England's compromised resources in Ball's absence.

Chris Woakes, and Anderson especially, allowed precious few scoring opportunities against the new ball and survival was very much the limit of Nick Larkin and Jake Carder's early ambition.

They managed it for almost 10 overs, before Larkin fell lbw pushing forward to Woakes for just six runs from 32 balls.

Number three Ryan Gibson soon went after a full delivery from Ball and was well caught by a diving Dawid Malan at third slip.

Then with Ball out of the equation, in the first over after the tea break, Carder pulled Craig Overton tamely to mid-on, and Will Pucovski was bowled off-stump playing no shot to leg-spinner Mason Crane.

Jason Sangha became Woakes' second victim, splicing a short ball into the hands of gully, but the increasingly confident pairing of Short and Paine took over for the next 17 overs.
