Dele Alli believes last season’s failed Champions League campaign has contributed to this season’s expert performances after Tottenham beat Real Madrid 3-1 at Wembley.

The Spurs midfielder bagged two goals against the reigning European champions but Wednesday night’s result was a far cry from what was witnessed a year ago.

Mauricio Pochettino led Tottenham into the Champions League for the first time, in the previous campaign, but exited the at the group stage as they failed to get to grips with their Wembley home.

However, Alli believes that harsh lesson has proved invaluable to the Spurs team as they have impressed in this year’s competition.

“It’s a massive confidence boost for us,” the England star told talkSPORT.

“Obviously it was a disappointing campaign for us last year but we had a lot to learn.

“It was a lot of our first time in the Champions League and it was important that we learnt this season and I think we showed that we have.

“We’re just looking forward to the next game and now we’ll make sure we win that.”

Alli was making his debut in this year’s Champions League after returning from suspension.

Following the victory against Real Madrid the midfielder was keen to praise his manager for showing faith in him.

“I’m very thankful for the trust he puts into me,” the 21-year-old added.

“There was a lot of very good performances by the boys when I was suspended but I’m thankful that he gave me a chance and put me in the starting XI tonight.

“I’m happy to get the two goals but more importantly it was a good performance by everyone.”
